The Chevrolet Camaro is an iconic American muscle car from General Motors' Chevrolet brand, embodying a "driver-centric" design philosophy. The car made its global debut in Detroit on 28 June 1966, envisioned as a "muscle sports car capable of devouring the Mustang". The "Camaro" nameplate originated from a dictionary, denoting "friend" or "comrade". Spanning six generations of evolution, the Camaro has captured the hearts of countless petrolheads worldwide with its distinctive styling, formidable performance, and rich American motoring heritage. In December 2023, the final Camaro rolled off the assembly line at the Lansing plant in Michigan, officially bringing the curtains down on this legendary model.

The Camaro is positioned as a two-door, four-seater high-performance muscle sports car, primarily appealing to driving enthusiasts who crave sheer performance and classic American car culture. In the domestic market, the sixth-generation Camaro RS was introduced as a fully imported (CBU) model in 2017, with the 2017 2.0T RS priced at a retail guide price of RM399,900. Subsequently, the official distributor pricing fluctuated between RM399,900 and RM475,800. In terms of exterior dimensions, the 2017 2.0T RS measures 4,786 mm long, 1,897 mm wide, and 1,356 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,811 mm. It tips the scales with a kerb weight of 1,570 kg and comes fitted with a 72-litre fuel tank. In 2024, production of the petrol-powered Camaro officially ceased; however, the President of General Motors has indicated that the Camaro nameplate could make a return on a future electric model.
The Camaro's exterior styling has always remained faithful to the brawny muscularity and commanding road presence of American muscle cars. The first-generation model was built on GM's rear-wheel-drive F-Body platform, offered in both coupe and convertible body styles. The second-generation model introduced in 1970 eliminated the droptop variant. The convertible made its return with the third generation in 1982. In 2006, the fifth-generation Camaro concept was revealed, underpinned by GM's full-size rear-wheel-drive Zeta platform, and starred in "Transformers 2" that same year, where its silver-screen persona as "Bumblebee" turned the Camaro into a household name across China.
Unveiled in 2015, the sixth-generation Camaro was engineered on GM's Alpha platform, adopting Chevrolet's latest-generation global design language. The front fascia features a distinct dual-tier intake grille, with the upper portion seamlessly integrated with the slim headlamps; the body contours are sleeker, more sculpted, and muscular. Inside and out, the car radiates a "dynamic vitality" design philosophy, brimming with athletic flair.
Inside, the sixth-generation Camaro adopts a "wraparound tech dual cockpit" layout, heavily focused around the driver. The cabin is trimmed with extensive premium leather upholstery and contrast stitching, noticeably elevating its overall perceived quality.
The sixth-generation Camaro offered an extensive array of powertrain options. The entry-level model packs a 2.0T inline-four turbocharged engine delivering 275 hp (202 kW) and a peak torque of 400 Nm. Mid-spec variants feature a 3.6L naturally aspirated V6 pushing out between 309 hp and 328 hp. Higher-spec iterations are powered by a 6.2L V8 engine kicking out over 400 hp. The flagship track-focused ZL1 1LE variant boasts a 6.2L LT4 supercharged V8 engine, churning out a massive 659 hp. Transmission options comprise a six-speed manual gearbox and an eight-speed automatic transmission (8AT). The 2017 2.0T RS completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 240 km/h, while the 6.2L V8 variant clocks the century sprint in just 4.3 seconds.
Built upon GM's Alpha platform, the sixth-generation Camaro incorporates extensive lightweight materials, reducing overall mass by 90 kg while increasing torsional rigidity by 28% over its predecessor. The suspension setup utilises a double-ball-joint MacPherson strut front suspension paired with a five-link independent rear suspension. GM's full-size rear-wheel-drive architecture provides an exceptionally planted stance with a wide track and low centre of gravity. The steering is agile and precise, complemented by masterfully calibrated suspension damping. Stopping power is provided by track-spec Brembo brake callipers matched with high-performance Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres. The car employs a classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR) layout. Drivers can toggle across multiple drive modes, including Snow, Sport, Standard, Manual, and Track.
The cabin of the sixth-generation Camaro comes standard with an 8-inch full-colour digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch central touchscreen infotainment display. The infotainment unit supports seamless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. On the seating front, it comes equipped with power-adjustable sports seats. Comfort and convenience amenities include dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, and remote engine start. The audio package features a 6-speaker sound system.
The Camaro offers a comprehensive safety suite. On the passive safety front, it is equipped with dual-stage front airbags, front side airbags, and front-to-rear side curtain airbags. Active safety systems include StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control, Side Blind Zone Alert (SBZA), Lane Change Alert (LCA), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), among others. It is further equipped with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Lane Departure Warning, reverse parking sensors, and a reverse camera. The body shell is built with one-piece stamping technology, reinforced with interlocking door hinge pins to maximise structural integrity and side-impact protection.
The Camaro commands an enormous global fanbase—with 699,538 units produced for the first generation alone. In the Chinese market, however, the Camaro faced multiple hurdles: tight rear legroom, restricted outward visibility with substantial blind spots; an on-the-road price of around RM450,000 for the 2.0T model where buyers had plenty of alternative performance choices; and its status as a niche CBU import, resulting in expensive replacement parts, inconvenient maintenance, and hefty fuel consumption. In 2024, Chevrolet officially drew the curtain on the sixth-generation Camaro. However, this discontinuation sparked instant collectability—the final Collector's Edition was rapidly snapped up in the used car market, fetching a price premium of RM60,000 over a comparable Mustang. From 1966 to 2023, across its 57-year production run, the Chevrolet Camaro has etched an indelible legacy in global automotive culture through its raw American muscle charm and the iconic on-screen presence of "Bumblebee".
